Professor Philippa Webb is Professor of Public International Law at Oxford's Blavatnik School of Government and a barrister at Twenty Essex. Her career has combined academia and practice at the United Nations, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the European Court of Human Rights, with a longstanding focus on fundamental rights including fair trial, free speech and freedom from slavery.

Alongside Amal Clooney, with whom she co-wrote books on fair trial and free speech, Philippa co-founded the Oxford Institute of Technology and Justice, a partnership between the University of Oxford and the Clooney Foundation for Justice that seeks to harness AI to close the global justice gap, where only around 10% of people who need a lawyer can access one. Working with the Microsoft AI for Good Lab, the Institute has built legal tools for women and girls in Malawi covering child marriage and gender-based violence, a prototype fair trial advisor trained on international and national case law, and support tools for journalists facing arrest or detention.

The Institute also tracks the risks of AI in justice systems, publishing policy briefs on legal accountability for malicious cyber operations and on the use of digital evidence and deepfakes in court, and runs the AI Justice Atlas, which maps how AI is used and regulated in courtrooms across an expanding list of jurisdictions worldwide.
